The fish-out-of-water comedy delivered line after line of quotable gems and some unforgettable performances from both Murphy and co-star Arsenio Hall, who, thanks to some amazing makeup (for which it won an Oscar), gave us iconic characters such as Murphy’s Jewish barbershop customer, Saul, and Jheri-curled Sexual Chocolate singer Randy Watson, as well as Hall’s deep-voiced, frisky female clubgoer. Set in 1965, Moonrise Kingdom is full of the brilliant whimsy and quirkiness that Anderson is known for and feels very much like the same universe as The Darjeeling Limited and The Royal Tenenbaums. The African Queen is one of director John Huston’s most beloved films, thanks in no small part to the pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn as the leads. It’s difficult to explain High Life in just a few words but we’ll try. In actress Regina King’s excellent directorial debut, she takes Kemp Powers’ screenplay of his own stage play and turns it into a riveting drama.
